London Underground and 4LM Project

The 4LM (Four Lines Modernisation) project currently underway at London Underground (LU) is the largest project of its kind in the world and worth in the region of 1.35 billion GBP. 

Working At Height Limited (WAH) have been involved with it since December 2017, this culminated in spending the first part of 2019 on site at Neasden Depot, the largest depot on the network, completing all works and demobilising from site on the 27th of February. 

The design, manufacture, planning, organising of the works were both time consuming and testing taking well over 12 months, as there were strict compliances and procedures required which can only be learnt fully once engaged on the project. 

WAH’s small part of the project included designing and manufacturing 6 x DAPs (Driver Access Platforms) and 5 x MAPs (Mobile Access Platforms). The DAPs to be in fixed position to allow safe access and egress from the new S Stock trains for the drivers and shunters. The MAPs are required for general train maintenance. 

WAH were also instructed to complete civils works which included building 3 x 3000mm long x 900mm wide concrete steps that interfaced with the DAP stairs at what became known as the ramp end of the 200m long depot, this entailed breaking out existing walls and then finishing with new hand railing, providing a level surface for the drivers and shunters to transfer from the DAP stairs and onto a level surface and not the existing ramp.
